Longtime Waco-area educator Sue Melton filed paperwork today to run for the State Board of Education in District 14.

Before retiring last year, Melton spent 36 years as an educator, most recently in West ISD. She is also a past state president of the Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE), the largest educator group in the state.

“As a lifelong educator, I just felt the time was right for me to run for the state board,” Melton said. “I am very passionate about public education and the educational opportunities we provide to our children. I know that my experience as an educator will allow me to be a strong representative for my district.”

Melton said one of her primary goals will be to focus on education instead of politics.

“We all get enough politics as it is,” Melton said. “The last place we need it is in our children’s classrooms.”
